How to price your Etsy listings for real profit

Etsy's fees are small individually but add up fast once you stack the listing fee, transaction fee, payment processing, and (for many shops) Offsite Ads. A price that looks profitable at a glance can quietly net you almost nothing once every fee and cost is subtracted. Here's how to price with your eyes open.

1

Price for margin, not just to match competitors

Matching a competitor's price tells you nothing about whether that price is profitable for your specific costs. Two sellers can charge the same $35 and one nets $12 while the other loses money — run your own numbers before you copy a price.

2

Never forget shipping fees stack with sale-price fees

Etsy charges its transaction and payment fees on your shipping charge too, not just your item price. Sellers who "charge cost-price shipping" often miss that Etsy still takes a cut of that shipping revenue.

3

Value your own time honestly

Skipping a labor cost because "it's just my time" is how sellers end up working for less than minimum wage without realizing it. Even a conservative hourly rate reveals whether a product is actually worth making.

4

Watch your Offsite Ads exposure

Offsite Ads fees (12–15%) are mandatory once you cross $10,000 in annual sales — you can't opt out, only choose whether ads run below that threshold. Factor that fee into your pricing before you hit the mandatory tier, not after.

5

Re-check your margin after every fee change

Etsy has adjusted its fee structure multiple times in recent years. A listing priced for a 30% margin two years ago may now be closer to 20% — it's worth re-running your numbers a couple of times a year.

Frequently asked questions

What fees does Etsy actually charge?+
Every Etsy sale is charged a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the sale price plus shipping, and a payment processing fee of about 3% + $0.25 (varies slightly by country). If a buyer arrived through Offsite Ads, an additional 12–15% Offsite Ads fee applies to that sale only.
Is this calculator really free?+
Yes — the calculator runs entirely in your browser, with no signup, no account, and no limit on how many prices you can test.
Does it account for Offsite Ads fees?+
Yes. Toggle Offsite Ads on in Advanced Options to see the 12% or 15% fee applied — it only ever charges on sales that actually came through an Offsite Ads click, never on organic sales.
Does it work for digital and print-on-demand shops, not just handmade?+
Yes — switch between Physical, Digital, and POD (print-on-demand) modes at the top. Each mode asks for the costs that actually apply to that business model (materials and packaging for physical, software and design time for digital, provider base cost for POD).
What margin should I aim for on Etsy?+
A common target is 30% net margin for physical and POD products, and 50%+ for digital products (since there's no per-sale material or shipping cost). The calculator flags when your price falls below a safe margin and suggests a price that hits your target.
